Say you've found a device that looks like a DS lying around. Or you went to Naoya, and he decides to give you a present. This is your Communication Player, or COMP, and you have just made the first step towards becoming a demon tamer.
THE BASICS OF SUMMONING
Using the demon summoning program, you can call forth demons to do whatever bidding you would like. The list of available demons is here - it is recommended to limit yourself to one that matches your character's own level of strength. Unique demons cannot be initial summons. Though in-game you can have two demons at a time on your team, this will be functioning under the same rules as Smash's Pokemon NPC guidelines, and you are limited to one. As such, the Demon Auction and Demonic fusion function will be disabled. However, it is possible to upgrade your demon - see the section How does demon summoning work?
Because Naoya is taken from the Silent Revolution ending route, demons no longer need a contract to be summoned - they can be directly controlled, thereby eliminating the risk of being killed by your initial summoning.
If your COMP is damaged, however, it is possible that the summoning program will go haywire, and control will be lost over your demon.
USING YOUR COMP
One of the unique features of the COMP is the Harmonizer, which uses some kind of wavelength to adjust the user's body so that their attacks have a greater effect on demons, and in-coming attacks are lessened. This essentially means that the user is given artificial strength and resilience that will put them on par with enemies that would otherwise outclass the average human body's capabilities.
The Harmonizer is also able to analyze the enemy's abilities and copy them using the Skill Crack function. Simply, if you defeat an enemy, it is possible to copy one of their magical skills and add them to your powers. Only one ability can be learned per battle. Once obtained, the user can perform these skills at will - with a moveset limit of 3 command powers and 3 passive powers.
For the sake of flexibility, crackable skills do not have to be limited to ones available in the Devil Survivor game. Example: if Pokemon are able to learn moves through data stored on TMs, there is no reason why the COMP cannot analyze the format of that data and replicate it. So go beat up a Charizard, and learn how to flamethrower. However, these new powers are in no way physical - maybe your throat will burn horribly from using it because humans haven't evolved to accommodate this power, but they will not activate unless you want them to, so you're not going to cough and accidentally set things on fire. It is all simulated by the COMP.
Because the COMP is capable of harnessing mental energy, users can control these powers through thought commands. This way, you won't have your head buried in a DS screen in the middle of a heated battle. It may take some practice for users to become experienced with hands-free COMP aided magic.
If the COMP's batteries run dry, however, it will shut down and the Harmonizer will deactivate, returning your physical and magical capabilities to normal. To preserve power, things like games and email have been deactivated in your COMP. Please keep an eye on your battery life.
HOW DOES DEMON SUMMONING WORK?
The COMP simulates the traditional methods of demon summoning digitally. A tremendous force of will is required, along with the proper tongue to call them forth from the demon world. Normally, the process would require many more complex ritual aspects to break through to the demon world, but Final Destination City already has incredibly weak barriers between dimensions.
This is the primary use of the COMP's ability to harness thoughts. It is able to distil the emotional energy of the Internet - meaning all the feels, the flamewars, the butthurt, everything that everyone pours out into digital form - into a format to fuel demon summoning. If your character is exceptionally good with computers and is able to hack into the COMP to take a look at the files, it is possible to learn this fact.
The other ingredient takes form of the demon summoning melody, a specific song whose file features predominantly in the summoning program's code. It uses the Ancient Common Tongue of music in a way that attracts demons. If played out loud, it is possible to lure nearby demons to its location.
Though COMP users are normally limited to demons of their level, it is possible to summon an especially high-ranking, Unique demon who will form a contract with you if they like you.
